Google Translate takes on Duolingo with new language learning tools

Google has announced an exciting new feature for Google Translate that leverages AI to enhance language learning, as revealed on Tuesday. This experimental tool aims to assist users in practicing and acquiring new language skills. In addition to this, Translate is introducing enhanced live capabilities that facilitate real-time communication with speakers of different languages. The newly introduced language practice feature caters to both novices eager to develop conversational abilities and proficient speakers aiming to refine their vocabulary. This tool generates personalized listening and speaking exercises, adapting to individual skill levels and learning objectives. With this offering, Google positions itself in competition with Duolingo, a widely-used language learning app known for its gamified approach to teaching over 40 languages. To utilize this feature, users need to select the “practice” option within the Google Translate app. From there, they can specify their skill level and learning goals. The app then creates customized scenarios that allow users to listen to conversations and identify words they hear to enhance comprehension, or they can engage in speaking practice. Notably, the exercises track daily progress, making it easier for learners to monitor improvements. As of Tuesday, the beta version of this experience is being rolled out on the Google Translate app for both Android and iOS devices. Initially, it is available for English speakers learning Spanish and French, as well as for Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers who wish to practice English. Moreover, Google is enhancing the app's functionality to enable users to engage in back-and-forth conversations, complete with audio and on-screen translations. According to a blog post from Google, these advancements build upon their existing live conversation capabilities, allowing seamless communication in over 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil. Users can access this feature by tapping the “Live translate” option in the app, choosing the desired language, and speaking to receive verbal translations along with a transcript in both languages. The app is capable of switching between languages dynamically, accommodating the natural flow of conversation, while accurately recognizing pauses, accents, and intonations. This live translation functionality is designed to work effectively even in noisy environments such as bustling restaurants or busy airports, thanks to Google's advanced voice and speech recognition technology. Starting on Tuesday, these live translation capabilities are available to users in the U.S., India, and Mexico. According to Google, these enhancements are the result of significant progress in AI and machine learning technologies. The company emphasized that as they continue to advance language processing and comprehension, they can support a broader array of languages and improve the quality and speed of translations. With the implementation of their Gemini models in Translate, Google claims to have made substantial improvements in translation accuracy, multimodal translation, and text-to-speech capabilities. Currently, Google reports that users translate approximately 1 trillion words across its various platforms, including Translate, Search, Lens, and Circle to Search. The company is optimistic that these new AI-driven features will help dismantle language barriers, making communication more accessible for everyone.
