Google is breaking new ground with its Translate app by expanding its live translation capabilities beyond its hardware ecosystem. The latest updates allow users to utilize live translation with any earbuds connected to their Android devices, marking a significant shift from previous practices where such features were exclusive to Google products. This enhanced version of the Translate app, powered by Gemini, not only improves translation quality across numerous languages but also incorporates engaging learning features reminiscent of Duolingo. Users can now enjoy seamless audio and text translations, enabling smooth conversations in real-time. Previously, initiating a live translation session required the use of Pixel Buds, but this restriction is being lifted with a beta test now available in the United States, Mexico, and India. While the audio translations strive to maintain the speaker's original tone and cadence, they may not match the full capabilities of voice translations offered by the latest Pixel phones. Currently, this feature is exclusive to Android devices, but Google plans to roll it out to iOS users in the near future. Although Apple offers a similar live translation capability on the iPhone, it is limited to users with AirPods, highlighting Google’s commitment to making its technology more accessible across a broader range of devices.
