Google is imposing new restrictions on its 'Work from Anywhere' (WFA) policy, which was initially introduced during the Covid pandemic to provide employees with flexibility in their work locations. Under this revised policy, even a single day of remote work will now be counted as a full week of the WFA allowance, according to internal documents obtained by CNBC. The updated guidelines specify that whether an employee takes one or five WFA days in a week, it will still deduct one full week from their WFA balance. This change comes as part of a broader shift in corporate culture, with many tech giants pushing for increased in-office presence as the pandemic era recedes. Despite these changes, Google is maintaining its hybrid work model that allows employees to work from home two days a week. However, the WFA days are distinct from this arrangement, as they do not permit remote work from home or nearby locations. The new policy explicitly states that WFA weeks cannot be used for working from home, stressing that remote work is meant to occur from different locations. As companies like Microsoft and Amazon mandate a return to the office—Microsoft requiring employees to be in the office three days a week and Amazon demanding five days—Google is also adapting its approach. Recently, the company has offered voluntary buyouts to some full-time U.S. employees and warned remote workers that their positions might be at risk if they do not adhere to the hybrid work model. The revised WFA policy also restricts employees from working from Google offices in different states or countries due to legal complications associated with cross-border work. If employees find themselves in another location, they may need to adjust their hours to align with that time zone. While not applicable to all employees—particularly those in data centers or roles requiring physical presence—the new policy has raised concerns. At a recent all-hands meeting, questions arose about the rationale behind counting a single day of WFA as an entire week, with some employees expressing confusion over the new rules. Google's Vice President of Performance and Rewards, John Casey, clarified that the WFA policy was designed to accommodate employees during the pandemic but was never intended to replace the established hybrid work week.
