In a significant move to tackle the issue of nonconsensual intimate images, commonly referred to as revenge porn, Google has announced a collaboration with the U.K. nonprofit StopNCII. This partnership aims to enhance the detection and removal of such distressing content from its search engine. Beginning this initiative, Google will utilize StopNCII's unique digital fingerprints, known as hashes, to proactively identify and eliminate nonconsensual intimate imagery from search results. StopNCII works by helping individuals safeguard their private images through the creation of a distinctive identifier that represents their intimate content. These hashes are then shared with partner platforms, including giants like Facebook, enabling them to automatically detect and remove matching content from their services. It is important to highlight that the actual intimate images remain securely stored on the user's device, with only the hash being sent to StopNCII's system. Google, in its recent blog post, emphasized its ongoing efforts, stating, "Our existing tools allow people to request the removal of NCII from Search, and we’ve continued to launch ranking improvements to reduce the visibility of this type of content." The company acknowledged feedback from survivors and advocates, noting the need for more robust measures to alleviate the burden on affected individuals. While this partnership is a step forward, it comes a year after Microsoft incorporated the StopNCII system into its Bing search engine. Other notable platforms that have joined forces with StopNCII include Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, Bumble, and Snapchat, among others. Google’s collaboration represents a vital part of its ongoing efforts to combat the spread of nonconsensual intimate images, following previous enhancements that made it easier to remove deepfake content from its search results.
