Google sues Chinese cybercrime network that used Gemini to automate scams

In a bold move, Google has initiated legal proceedings against a Chinese cybercrime organization known as Outsider Enterprise, which is accused of orchestrating an extensive scam campaign powered by artificial intelligence. The tech giant has revealed that it is collaborating with law enforcement agencies and mobile carriers to combat this rising threat. According to the details released in Google's legal documents, Outsider Enterprise operates through the messaging platform Telegram. This group reportedly offers a 'phishing-as-a-service' model, catering to individuals who lack the technical expertise to create fraudulent websites and orchestrate deceptive text message campaigns independently. The investigations indicate that Outsider Enterprise has been using Google’s Gemini AI to design counterfeit websites that mimic legitimate platforms like Google, YouTube, and government services, including New York’s E-ZPass. With nearly 300 scam templates at their disposal, the group has sent over 2.5 million fraudulent text messages to Android users, with a significant spike of around 55,000 messages occurring in just a two-week span last month. Google has identified approximately 9,000 fake websites and 1 million URLs associated with this scam network. The deceptive text messages often misled users with claims about account issues or package delivery problems. Clicking on these links redirected victims to the fraudulent sites, which were expertly crafted by Gemini to appear authentic, ultimately leading to the theft of personal and banking information. While the legal filing does not provide a specific figure regarding the financial losses incurred due to the Outsider Enterprise scams, reports indicate that numerous individuals have fallen victim to these schemes. In response, Google has partnered with major carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile to intercept many of these harmful text messages. Additionally, Google's on-device scam detection technology in Google Messages is estimated to prevent around 10 billion scam texts each month, suggesting it may have successfully mitigated some of the activity linked to Outsider Enterprise.
