Google sues alleged Chinese cybercrime operation that used AI to send scam texts

In a bold move to combat cybercrime, Google has initiated legal proceedings against a purported Chinese cybercrime group known as Outsider Enterprise. The company claims that this network has harnessed artificial intelligence to execute widespread scams, sending deceptive text messages that impersonate Google and other well-known brands in an effort to steal sensitive information such as passwords and credit card details. According to Google, Outsider Enterprise has victimized hundreds of thousands of individuals, resulting in financial losses that could total millions of dollars. In a staggering display of their operations, the group reportedly created 9,000 fraudulent websites and registered over 1 million fake web domains. During a two-week period, they dispatched approximately 2.5 million scam text messages targeting Android users alone. This past May, Google noted an alarming trend, with Android users flagging 55,000 spam texts within just two weeks—equating to more than two complaints every minute. To counteract these threats, Google has developed AI-driven tools designed to detect and mitigate scams, successfully intercepting over 10 billion fraudulent messages monthly. In its fight against this cyber threat, Google has partnered with major telecommunications companies, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, to block the fraudulent messages. Additionally, the tech giant is working closely with the FBI, which is reportedly pursuing various law enforcement actions in connection with this case. However, the FBI has yet to provide any immediate comments regarding the situation.
