Google Play Games for PC is getting more premium titles and cross-buy with Android

Google has been exploring the integration of its Play Games platform into Windows for several years, but only recently has it intensified its efforts. As the 2026 Game Developer Conference unfolds, the tech giant has unveiled several exciting updates aimed at enhancing its desktop gaming initiative. The company has committed to expanding its library of Windows games, making them easier to discover, and facilitating the cross-play experience between Android devices and PCs. A significant change will see the introduction of a dedicated Windows tab in the mobile and web Play Store, showcasing content specifically optimized for desktop gaming. Users will be directed to download the Windows client to enjoy these titles on their computers, although they can also add games to their wishlists from any device. This feature will enable developers to send notifications about sales to entice potential buyers. Initially available only on mobile, this capability will extend to PC later. Historically, finding games on Google Play for PC has presented challenges, but the company is actively addressing this issue. A selection of premium games is set to debut on the platform this year, including titles like Sledding Game, 9 Kings, Potion Craft, and Moonlight Peaks, with Low Budget Repairs scheduled for 2027. For those hesitant to invest in a game upfront, Google plans to introduce trial versions for selected titles, starting with Dredge on Android, with intentions to expand this option to more developers and Windows in the future. While Google has faced difficulties attracting developers in the past, preferring to provide tools and hoping for success, it is now taking steps to encourage premium gaming experiences on Google Play. Although the current focus remains on Windows, the introduction of compelling desktop titles is expected to benefit the upcoming release of Android-based Aluminium OS laptops. Despite the modest number of large-screen games confirmed for launch over the next year, these developments signal a positive move for Google, even if it doesn't pose a significant challenge to Steam's market dominance.
