Google cuts more than 100 design-related roles in cloud unit

In a significant restructuring move, Google has laid off more than 100 employees within its cloud division, specifically targeting those in design-related positions. This decision affects teams focused on quantitative user experience research and platform service experience, as detailed in internal documents. The layoffs have resulted in a halving of some design teams in the cloud unit, predominantly impacting employees based in the United States. Those affected have been granted until early December to secure new positions within the company. Despite multiple requests for comment, Google has not provided any immediate response regarding the layoffs. Reports indicate that these job cuts are part of a broader strategy as Google shifts its focus towards enhancing its artificial intelligence infrastructure. Since the start of the year, the tech giant has initiated voluntary exit packages across various U.S.-based divisions and has significantly reduced management roles overseeing small teams. Additionally, the company is encouraging its workforce to integrate more AI into their everyday tasks. This round of layoffs follows a trend within the tech industry, as other major corporations like Microsoft and Meta have also made significant cuts recently. In July, Microsoft let go of around 9,000 employees, highlighting an ongoing trend of workforce reductions across the sector.
