Google introduces a new way for users to sideload Android apps that still protects against scams

In a recent move following the resolution of its protracted antitrust dispute regarding the Android app ecosystem, Google announced a new method that streamlines the process of sideloading apps on Android devices. This approach aims to give users more freedom to install apps from sources outside the Play Store, while still maintaining robust protections against potential scams. The tech giant unveiled an 'advanced flow' setting that allows users to disable certain verification requirements that typically prevent the installation of unverified apps. Last year, Google mandated that all apps must come from verified developers to be installed on certified Android devices, a step taken to thwart malware distribution, financial fraud, and the unauthorized collection of personal information through non-Play Store applications. However, many users expressed a desire for the flexibility to sideload apps at their own risk. With the new advanced flow feature, users can undertake a one-time process to relax these protections, enabling them to install unverified applications while still being shielded from scams. The process begins with enabling developer mode within the Android settings, which is designed to prevent accidental bypasses that scammers might exploit. Google highlighted that fraudsters typically manipulate victims by creating a sense of urgency, often using threats related to financial loss or personal safety. They frequently remain on the line, guiding users through the disabling of security features. According to a report by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA), over half of adults worldwide encountered scams in 2025. To combat this, after activating developer mode, users must complete a quick verification step to ensure that no one else is assisting in disabling security settings. Following this, a phone restart and reauthentication process is required, cutting off any potential remote access that scammers may have. Once a protective waiting period of one day concludes, users can confirm the change using biometric methods, such as fingerprint or facial recognition, or a device PIN. After this step, users can freely install apps from unverified developers, with the option to enable this capability for either a week or indefinitely. Despite the ability to sideload apps, Google assures that a warning will still appear if the app is developed by an unverified source, although users can dismiss this alert. Additionally, Google is providing free limited distribution accounts for students and hobbyists, allowing them to share apps with a small group without the need for extensive verification processes. These developments come on the heels of a settlement between Google and Epic Games concerning anticompetitive practices on the Play Store. As part of the agreement, Google will lower its Play Store commissions to 20% for in-app purchases, with an added 5% fee if developers opt to use Google's billing system.
