Google is revamping its internal learning platform, Grow, to emphasize the integration of artificial intelligence tools into everyday work practices, as reported by CNBC. Previously, Grow offered a diverse range of courses, including product development, 3D printing, personal finance, and even recreational activities like solving a Rubik's cube. However, the platform's focus has now pivoted almost entirely to AI-related education. This transformation highlights a broader trend among companies, both in the technology sector and beyond, as they rush to equip their workforce with the necessary skills to utilize advanced AI solutions, a shift catalyzed by the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI in late 2022. Earlier this year, employees who had registered for sessions on Grow were informed that their upcoming classes would be cancelled and that course materials would be archived, according to internal communications reviewed by CNBC. Originally established over a decade ago, Grow had amassed more than 500,000 course listings before this significant overhaul. It has long been regarded as a unique benefit for Google employees, fostering a culture of active learning. A spokesperson for Google remarked, "We have an active learning culture with numerous in-house courses tied to company priorities, along with generous educational reimbursement. Our internal course offerings have ballooned since we launched it ten years ago, and we're refreshing Grow to help employees find the most relevant learning opportunities." The decision to revamp Grow indicates a strategic shift at Google, moving away from programs that are considered non-essential towards those that are crucial for business success, particularly as the company navigates a competitive landscape in AI. Amid ongoing challenges to maintain its search engine dominance, Google has undertaken cost-cutting measures, including layoffs and the reduction of employee benefits. In light of these changes, Google has also scaled back initiatives such as diversity, equity, and inclusion training, aligning with recent business streamlining efforts. An internal memo to employees involved in creating course content stated that many courses on the platform were deemed outdated and irrelevant. It emphasized that only those courses confirmed to be current and aligned with business priorities would remain available. Employees expressed that this focus on business priorities reflects a notable shift in Google's operational strategy, prioritizing programs that bolster the company's financial performance.
