Google to resume green card applications in 2026, but eligibility rules apply

Google, the renowned tech leader based in Mountain View, has informed its employees about the upcoming resumption of green card applications starting in the first quarter of 2026. This initiative is part of the Program Electronic Review Management (PERM), which is essential for obtaining a U.S. green card. According to a report from Business Insider, a memo from December 2025 revealed that an external attorney will reach out to eligible employees to initiate their permanent residency applications. Typically, tech companies like Google sponsor the PERM process to assist employees on work visas, such as H-1B, in securing a green card, allowing them to live and work in the U.S. indefinitely. However, it is crucial to note that not all Google employees will qualify for this process. The eligibility criteria outlined in the internal memos specify that only those on H-1B visas or other work visas with a minimum performance rating of Moderate Impact (MI) will be considered. Furthermore, employees in Level 3 roles or lower may find it challenging to meet the necessary standards for sponsorship. To qualify for the PERM application, employees must be physically located in a Google office; remote workers will need to agree to relocate to become eligible. Moreover, specific job roles must include a formal degree and relevant work experience, in line with the Department of Labor's requirements. Maintaining good standing within the company is also essential; employees must not have any disciplinary actions against them and should uphold a positive employment status. In the current year, Google has already submitted a limited number of PERM applications and plans to continue this process next year, adhering to the established eligibility criteria.
