Google to launch first of its AI glasses in 2026

Google announced on Monday its ambitious plan to introduce its first AI-driven glasses in 2026, intensifying its rivalry with Meta in the burgeoning consumer market for AI technology. The tech giant is partnering with prominent brands such as Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker, having committed $150 million to this initiative as of May. The upcoming eyewear will feature audio-only models enabling users to interact with the Gemini artificial intelligence assistant, as detailed in a recent company blog post. Additionally, there will be advanced glasses equipped with an in-lens display, providing users with crucial information including navigation and language translation. While Google has confirmed the launch of these innovative glasses next year, specifics regarding the styles included remain undisclosed. A filing from Warby Parker indicates that its first collaboration with Google is also expected to debut in 2026. This new line of glasses will operate on Android XR, Google’s dedicated operating system for headsets. This announcement follows Google's earlier commitment to reenter the smart glasses arena, a move co-founder Sergey Brin attributed to lessons learned from previous failures. He highlighted that prior models suffered due to insufficient AI capabilities and supply chain mismanagement, which led to high prices. "Now, in the AI world, the things these glasses can do to help you out without constantly distracting you — that capability is much higher," Brin remarked in May. The AI wearables market is gaining momentum, with Meta currently at the forefront. The company's Ray-Ban Meta glasses have enjoyed notable success, created in collaboration with eyewear leader EssilorLuxottica. Recently, Meta also introduced display glasses that allow users to access messages, photo previews, and live captions through a built-in lens display. Other tech firms like Snap and Alibaba are rapidly developing their own AI glasses, further fueling this competitive and evolving market. In addition to the glasses, Google also shared updates on its Galaxy XR headset, including new features that allow connectivity with Windows PCs and a travel mode designed for use in airplanes and cars.
