Android may finally catch up to Apple with seamless cross-device handoff feature

For a long time, Apple users have relished the seamless experience of switching tasks between their devices, such as the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. However, Android users have been waiting for a similar feature. According to a recent report from Android Authority, Google is now developing its own version of Apple’s Handoff functionality. To understand the significance of this development, it’s essential to know how Apple’s Handoff feature operates. This functionality allows users to initiate a task on one Apple device and continue it effortlessly on another. For example, a user can begin reading an article on their iPhone and then switch to their iPad or Mac without losing progress. This feature relies on proximity and a shared iCloud account. The report from Android Authority has uncovered hints about Google’s upcoming cross-device feature within the Android 16 operating system. This capability will reportedly be found under the “Cross-device services” settings, which also encompasses features like call casting and internet sharing. With Google’s new Handoff-like feature, users can expect to see options for notification syncing, file sharing, and app continuity across various devices. The functionality aims to allow users to transfer the current state of an application from one Android device to another, mimicking the experience on iOS. When users transition from a smartphone to a tablet or PC, a suggestion will appear on the taskbar to continue their work seamlessly. However, unlike Apple’s implementation, the report did not indicate any functionality for transferring tasks from a PC or tablet back to a phone. Microsoft has also been working on a similar feature with its Phone Link app but has faced challenges due to the absence of Google’s involvement, relying on individual manufacturers to enable the necessary permissions for resuming tasks on Android devices. Google has recently announced its plans to create Snapdragon-powered Android PCs and merge ChromeOS with Android into a single operating system, which could facilitate the introduction of this new Handoff feature across both platforms. As for the anticipated launch timeline, the Android Authority report suggests that this feature may debut with the Android 17 update, expected next year.
