Google inks $3B deal to buy hydropower from Brookfield

In a significant move to support its growing data center operations, Google has announced a landmark agreement to purchase over $3 billion worth of carbon-free hydropower from Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management. This deal includes 20-year power purchase agreements that collectively provide 670 megawatts from two hydropower facilities located in Pennsylvania. This agreement is part of a larger framework that enables Google to potentially acquire up to 3 gigawatts of renewable energy. As tech giants such as Google, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft expand their data center capabilities to support the latest advancements in AI, the demand for sustainable energy sources continues to rise. The increased energy needs have reinvigorated interest in nuclear energy, enhanced gas production, and emphasized the importance of renewable resources. Google has invested billions to secure a stable energy supply, while Meta has taken an unusual step of acquiring a nuclear facility, and Microsoft has also committed to a long-term deal with a nuclear power plant that has a controversial past. Beyond meeting immediate energy needs, this partnership with Brookfield aligns with the companies' goals of achieving net-zero emissions. Brookfield Renewable Partners has pledged to upgrade its Pennsylvania hydropower plants, Holtwood and Safe Harbor, to ensure they meet the latest operational standards. Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's head of data center energy, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, highlighting the role of hydropower as a reliable, cost-effective energy source that supports job creation and strengthens the electrical grid in the PJM region.
