Google removes AI Overviews for certain medical queries

In response to a recent investigation by the Guardian, Google has taken action by removing AI-generated overviews for specific medical inquiries. The investigation revealed that the AI Overviews provided potentially misleading data regarding health queries, such as the normal ranges for liver blood tests. Users searching for this information were shown figures that failed to consider crucial variables like age, sex, ethnicity, and nationality, which could mislead individuals regarding their health status. Following the report, it was noted that Google has eliminated AI Overviews for the queries about the normal ranges for liver blood tests and liver function tests. However, variations of these queries still yielded AI-generated responses, causing concern over the reliability of the information being presented. Interestingly, when similar searches were conducted shortly after the Guardian's report, many did not return any AI Overviews, although users were still given the option to engage in AI Mode for their questions. In a statement to the Guardian, a Google spokesperson refrained from commenting on specific removals but emphasized the company’s commitment to making broad improvements in search functionality. The spokesperson also mentioned that an internal team of clinicians had reviewed the highlighted queries and found that, in many cases, the information was accurate and corroborated by reputable sources. Last year, Google introduced new features aimed at refining its search results for health-related queries. Vanessa Hebditch, director of communications and policy at the British Liver Trust, expressed her approval of the removal but raised concerns about the overarching issue of AI Overviews in health contexts, suggesting that merely addressing one query does not resolve the larger challenges associated with AI in medical information dissemination.
