In a notable response to user concerns, Google has announced a new toggle feature for its Google Photos app, enabling users to revert to the traditional, faster search experience. This change comes after feedback from users who expressed dissatisfaction with the AI-driven 'Ask Photos' feature, which was introduced in the U.S. in 2024. The 'Ask Photos' function allows users to conduct searches using natural language, including more complex inquiries. However, the rollout faced challenges, leading to a temporary pause last summer as Google aimed to address latency issues. Many users reported that the AI feature struggled to locate certain images and that the accuracy of searches had diminished compared to the classic search experience. Previously, Google had provided an option to disable the AI component, but it was not prominently featured in the settings, making it easy for users to overlook. With the introduction of the new toggle button on the search interface, users can now easily switch off the AI search and access the classic results they prefer. Shimrit Ben-Yair, the head of Google Photos, shared the announcement, emphasizing that the decision to enhance user control stemmed from direct feedback. In a post on X, she stated, "We’ve heard your feedback that you want more control over the type of results you see when searching in Google Photos." Ben-Yair also highlighted improvements made to the quality of popular searches based on user suggestions, reaffirming the company’s commitment to refining the user experience. She encouraged continued feedback, stating, "It helps us build a more magical experience for everyone."
