Google has announced a significant update regarding its transition from the Google Assistant to the new Gemini AI model on Android devices. Originally planned for the end of 2025, the shift is now scheduled for 2026, as revealed by Anish K, the Community Manager for the Gemini Apps team. This transition signifies that Google Assistant will be entirely phased out from Android phones, tablets, and the standalone iOS app, making way for the advanced capabilities of Gemini. But what does this mean for users, and why the delay? In March 2025, the tech giant first hinted at the replacement of Assistant with Gemini. However, the company has recently updated its timeline, indicating that the rollout will take place sometime in 2026. According to a post on the Gemini Help Desk, the delay is aimed at ensuring a “seamless transition.” Given the complexities involved in moving to a generative AI model, this precaution seems warranted. Currently, Google is prioritizing OS-level upgrades with the upcoming holiday season in mind, a time when smartphone usage typically increases. This focus on stability and user experience takes precedence over the introduction of major backend changes at this time. The rollout of the Gemini transition is expected to begin in March 2026, with updates gradually released throughout the year. In the interim, users will still have the option to toggle between Gemini and Assistant. Notably, the upcoming Google Pixel 10 series will adopt Gemini as its default assistant, signaling a new era for Google's AI technology. Users may need to exercise some patience before fully experiencing the capabilities of the Gemini assistant.
