The Google Play Store is set to undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of a host of AI-driven functionalities, a revamped Apps tab, improved Play Games service, and enhanced app discovery tools. Among the most exciting new offerings is the Gemini-powered Sidekick feature, designed to assist gamers during their sessions. The Sidekick feature introduces an innovative in-game overlay that allows players to capture screenshots, record gameplay, and even stream their matches on YouTube, all without interrupting their gaming experience. A standout capability of this overlay is the integration of Gemini Live, which enables players to summon an AI assistant for real-time support while gaming. This feature is expected to function in a manner similar to the Gemini app's live assistance, where users can pose questions about their environment. However, the effectiveness of Gemini's help during live gameplay remains to be seen. According to Google, the Sidekick feature is designed to curate essential gaming information and provide direct access to Gemini Live for immediate guidance, ensuring players can maintain their focus on the game. However, a potential challenge may arise for users, especially those with devices from manufacturers like Vivo, Oppo, or OnePlus. These brands often include dedicated gaming modes that can conflict with the Sidekick overlay, forcing users to choose which feature to disable to avoid multiple pop-ups. In addition to the Sidekick, Google is launching a new "You" tab on the Play Store. This tab will offer users insights into their rewards, subscriptions, personalized recommendations, statistics, and updates, streamlining the process of managing and discovering content across devices. Furthermore, the "You" tab will help users explore other interests, providing tailored suggestions for audiobooks and podcasts. Google is also introducing a gamer profile feature within the Play Store, allowing users to track their stats and achievements across various games and devices. Players will have the option to customize their profiles with Gen AI-based avatars, adding a personal touch to their gaming identity. After three years in beta, Google Play Games is now ready for a broader audience, supporting over 200,000 mobile and PC games. The rollout of the "You" tab and the integrated gaming platform is slated to begin this week in select Play Points markets, with additional countries expected to be added starting October 1st.
