Google Photos uses AI to make the iconic closet from ‘Clueless’ a reality

On Wednesday, Google Photos unveiled an exciting new feature that utilizes artificial intelligence to transform photos of your clothing into a digital closet. This innovative tool allows users to brainstorm outfit ideas and even try on their creations virtually, reminiscent of Cher's famous digital wardrobe from the classic film 'Clueless.' In the movie, Cher effortlessly browsed through her clothing selections to decide on the perfect outfit. The upcoming feature will harness AI technology to automatically compile a digital representation of your wardrobe based on the clothing items captured in your Google Photos library. Users will have the ability to sort items by categories such as tops, bottoms, and accessories, enabling them to mix and match pieces to create various outfits. The concept of a digital closet in 'Clueless' highlighted a lifestyle of luxury, and now, the fashion industry, along with numerous startups, has aspired to replicate that ease of outfit creation. Google aims to democratize this experience, believing that advancements in AI will allow everyone to access a similar tool that can enhance and evolve over time. Users will be able to share their outfit creations with friends or save them to a digital mood board, organizing inspiration for different occasions like travel, events, or date nights. Additionally, the feature will include a virtual try-on option, allowing users to preview how their outfits would look. While this highly anticipated feature is not yet available, Google has confirmed it will debut on Android later this summer, followed by an iOS release, where it will be found under the 'Collections' tab. This new offering will enter a competitive market alongside existing apps such as Acloset, Combyne, and Pureple. Although Google did not disclose specific details on the AI's functionality, it will identify clothing and accessories from users' libraries to generate tailored snapshots. To achieve optimal results, users may want to take care in photographing their clothes, much like Cher did in the movie.
