Google is set to revolutionize photo editing for users in India, Australia, and Japan by introducing an AI-driven editing feature that simplifies the process of enhancing images through natural language commands. This announcement, made on Tuesday, marks the expansion of a service that was initially available to Pixel 10 users in the U.S. starting last August. With this innovative feature, users can now interact with Google Photos by simply typing in their desired edits rather than struggling with complicated tools. When tapping the edit option on a photo, users in the newly added regions will see a 'Help me Edit' box. Here, they can choose from suggested prompts or articulate their own needs in everyday language. For instance, requests like 'remove the motorcycle in the background' or 'restore this old photo' can be easily executed. The AI is capable of addressing even more intricate requests, such as altering a friend's pose or removing their glasses from a snapshot. The technology behind these capabilities is powered by Google’s Nano Banana image model, which processes edits directly within the app, negating the need for internet connectivity during the editing process. This feature is accessible on any Android device equipped with at least 4GB of RAM and running Android 8.0 or later, broadening its reach beyond just Google Pixel phones. In addition to geographical expansion, Google is enhancing language support, adding Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Bengali, and Gujarati, which allows millions of users to utilize the tool in their native languages. Furthermore, Google Photos will also implement C2PA Content Credentials in these regions, which provides metadata indicating when an image has been created or modified using AI. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly prevalent, such credentials are essential for helping users navigate and understand the images they encounter on social media. This rollout is part of Google’s ongoing commitment to embedding AI across its services. Last November, Google extended its AI-assisted search functionalities to over 100 countries in more than 17 languages. The company also introduced AI templates for transforming photos into various artistic styles, and just last week, it launched a new 'Meme me' feature, empowering users to create memes by blending reference templates with their own images.
