In a recent update, Google Photos has revitalized its AI-driven 'Ask Photos' feature, aiming to deliver faster and more reliable search outcomes. Initially introduced during the I/O developer conference, this tool enables users to search their photo collections using natural language, tapping into the advanced capabilities of Google's Gemini AI. However, the rollout faced setbacks as users reported issues with sluggish response times and reliability. Jamie Aspinall, the product manager for Google Photos, acknowledged these concerns in a post on X, admitting that the feature needed enhancements in speed, quality, and user experience. In a blog update, Google announced that it would integrate the efficiency of its classic search functions into the Ask Photos feature, particularly for straightforward queries like 'beach' or 'dogs.' This integration is designed to ensure that results are displayed promptly, mirroring the performance of traditional search options. As users input their requests, the AI will work discreetly in the background to curate the most pertinent images. For example, a search for a 'white dog' will generate immediate results, while the AI processes more detailed information to refine the results further. The interface will still allow users to revert to classic search if they prefer that experience. With these updates, Google is expanding the availability of Ask Photos to a broader audience across the United States. To access this feature, users must be 18 or older, have their account language set to English, and enable Face Groups, which tags individuals and pets in their Google Photos library.
