Google has unveiled a new feature called "Audio Briefing" for its News app, designed to enhance the news consumption experience for mobile users. This innovative addition allows users to listen to news headlines instead of reading them, making it an ideal solution for those who prefer a hands-free approach while commuting, driving, or managing daily tasks. The Audio Briefing feature, which was initially teased during a pilot program last week, is now being rolled out to Android users. Within the Google News app, a new tab labeled "Listen," complete with an over-the-ear headphones icon and AI sparkle, has been introduced. Tapping on this tab reveals a bottom sheet that slides up, presenting an audio player interface featuring a Material 3 Expressive-like design. This audio player includes essential controls such as play/pause and playback speed adjustments. Users can also navigate with skip and rewind options, including a 15-second rewind, a 30-second forward, and a “next subject” button to switch to different news topics effortlessly. However, Google has cautioned users that the Audio Briefing is generated by AI, which may not always be perfect. Each audio brief lasts between 10 to 15 minutes and covers multiple news stories. The format features two AI hosts engaging in a conversational style, making the updates more engaging for listeners. Currently, the Audio Briefing feature is available for Android devices, with plans to roll it out for iOS users in the near future.
