In a groundbreaking initiative, Google has unveiled a series of substantial investments aimed at enhancing India's artificial intelligence landscape during the 'Lab to Impact' dialogue held in conjunction with the India AI Impact Summit 2026. This strategic move is set to bolster various sectors, including healthcare, education, and the burgeoning startup ecosystem in the country. Among the key announcements, Google is committing $400,000 to develop the Health Foundation Model in collaboration with AIIMS and IISc. This innovative model is expected to revolutionize dermatology by prioritizing patients in outpatient departments and standardizing medical records to adhere to the FHIR standard. Additionally, over 400,000 health facilities will be mapped on Google Maps, enhancing accessibility and improving healthcare delivery. Google is also setting aside $8 million to establish four AI Centres of Excellence at renowned institutions like IISc Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Ropar. These centers will focus on leveraging AI to tackle pressing challenges such as non-communicable diseases, urban governance, and agricultural efficiency. Furthermore, a $2 million investment will be directed toward IIT Bombay to foster research in Indic Language Technologies. Minister of Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, highlighted the significance of these centers, describing them as a national research mission designed to advance foundational research and responsible AI applications that serve public interests, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. In a move to empower local startups, Google is providing $50,000 each to companies like Gnani.AI, CoRover.AI, and BharatGen to assist in developing AI models for Indic languages. The tech giant has also uploaded 22 Gemma models to AIKosh, India's open AI platform, to support developer initiatives. Additionally, Google is investing $4.5 million in Wadhwani AI to create multilingual applications such as HealthVaani and Garuda, aimed at delivering agricultural advice via the AgriVaani app. In a separate venture, a partnership with ReNew Energy will see the launch of a 150 MW solar project in Rajasthan, aimed at generating sustainable energy for Google's operations, thereby reducing carbon emissions. These initiatives are projected to save India approximately ₹390 billion annually in healthcare expenses, according to Google. Dr. Manish Gupta, Senior Research Director at Google DeepMind, emphasized that this comprehensive approach will position India as a leader in the global AI-powered future.
