Google Meet comes to Android Auto, but with a key limitation

Google Meet has officially introduced its functionality for Android Auto, following a similar rollout on Apple CarPlay. However, users relying on work accounts will face significant limitations, which could hinder the app's utility for professional environments. Reports indicate that the rollout is underway for select users, with many sharing screenshots highlighting a pop-up notification within the Meet app, announcing support for Android Auto. This feature allows users to check their schedules and join video calls directly through their vehicle's display, promoting a safer, hands-free experience. The app encourages users to connect their devices to their cars and access the Meet app for seamless interaction while driving. Google's support documentation clarifies that calls made through Android Auto will bypass the pre-call screen and will have video disabled for safety reasons. Users will have access to a Scheduled tab that displays their calendar meetings, enabling them to join calls easily. While the microphone muting feature is available, other functionalities such as Hand Raise, Q&A, and Polls are disabled to adhere to safety standards, with only essential call information and controls visible on the screen. Notably, Google has confirmed that work profile accounts are not supported on the Meet app for Android Auto. While active calls will still show up on the display, users will not be able to see upcoming meetings or call history. A statement from the company specifies, "Work profile accounts aren’t supported in Meet on Android Auto. Active calls will still appear on your display, but upcoming meetings and call history will not show." With the recent launch of Google Meet for Apple CarPlay and expectations for it to cater to all Google Workspace customers, the restriction on work accounts for Android Auto stands out. This limitation is especially significant, considering that professionals are likely to be the primary users of such features while driving. The full rollout of Google Meet for Android Auto is anticipated to expand in the near future.
