Google Maps is set to enhance the navigation experience for users in India with the introduction of ten new features, designed to create a more interactive, AI-driven mapping service. During a recent briefing, Lalitha Ramani, General Manager for Google Maps India, revealed that these updates aim to integrate the Gemini AI into navigation, offering a more conversational and intuitive driving experience. With Gemini's capabilities, users can engage with the AI assistant while they navigate, asking questions about nearby amenities like petrol stations or restaurants. This interaction goes beyond simple searches, as Gemini is designed to reason through multi-step queries, integrating reliable information from various sources, including web reviews and community insights. In the coming weeks, users will find that Gemini enhances their exploration and planning processes before visiting their favorite eateries or attractions. The AI will analyze user feedback and online content, providing practical tips, such as the best times to visit a location or key menu items at a restaurant. Additionally, it can offer insider advice, like whether bargaining is acceptable at a market or highlighting must-see spots. The new features also include automatic alerts for users about significant disruptions and delays on their routes, even when not actively using the app. Anal Ghosh, Senior Programme Manager at Google, explained that Google Maps will act as a proactive assistant, notifying drivers of issues ahead of them. This functionality is initially rolling out in major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, focusing on significant roads and highways. The app will also provide visual and auditory alerts as users approach areas prone to accidents, a feature developed in collaboration with local authorities specifically for the Indian context. Moreover, Google Maps is enhancing user experience by partnering with traffic authorities to display accurate speed limits during navigation. This feature will be available in nine Indian cities, including Gurugram and Hyderabad. Users will also benefit from amenities information, such as public restrooms and dining options, as well as customization options for their navigation icons based on their two-wheeler type and color preferences. Voice support for navigating flyovers will be available in nine local languages, ensuring that two-wheeler riders receive clear, hands-free instructions. Lastly, the ability to save ticket bookings directly to Google Wallet for easy access through Google Maps is being rolled out, initially for users in Delhi, Bangalore, Kochi, and Chennai, with support for Mumbai to follow soon. These advancements mark a significant step forward in making Google Maps a more user-friendly and intelligent navigation tool in India.
