Google Maps is getting an AI ‘Ask Maps’ feature and upgraded ‘immersive’ navigation

In an exciting update, Google has announced the introduction of its latest AI-driven features for Google Maps, including a conversational tool called "Ask Maps" powered by Gemini, and a revamped "Immersive Navigation" experience. This innovative update aims to enhance how users interact with the app and navigate their surroundings. The "Ask Maps" feature allows users to pose complex, real-world inquiries using natural language. For instance, a user might ask, "Where can I charge my phone without waiting in line for coffee?" or "Are there any public tennis courts with lights available tonight?" This intelligent assistant is designed to assist with trip planning as well, providing suggestions for stops along a route, such as, "I’m visiting the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes - any must-see spots?" By personalizing responses based on previously searched or saved places, Ask Maps aims to offer tailored suggestions, such as recommending vegan restaurants when asked for a cozy dining spot. Currently rolling out in the United States and India for both Android and iOS devices, Ask Maps will soon be available on desktop as well. Meanwhile, the updated "Immersive Navigation" feature introduces a 3D view that incorporates real-world elements like buildings, overpasses, and terrain, reminiscent of Apple Maps. This new visual approach enhances road details such as lanes, stop signs, and crosswalks, providing drivers with a more informative navigation experience. The update also includes smarter functionalities, allowing drivers to gain a comprehensive overview of their routes with smart zoom capabilities and transparent building overlays, helping them prepare for challenging turns and lane changes. Voice guidance has been improved to sound more natural, offering users instructions like, "Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South." Moreover, the app will now inform users about the pros and cons of alternate routes, including traffic conditions and tolls. In addition to these enhancements, Google Maps will alert users to real-time obstacles, such as road construction or accidents, utilizing data from both Google Maps and Waze communities. Users can also preview their destinations and nearby amenities using Street View imagery, with added recommendations for parking options. Miriam Daniel, VP of Google Maps, emphasized the goal of the redesign: "Our team set out to enhance the driving experience by eliminating uncertainties during trips. Immersive navigation represents a total transformation of how we navigate, incorporating redesigned visuals and timely information that makes guidance more intuitive." The rollout of Immersive Navigation will begin across the U.S. immediately, with plans to extend availability to compatible iOS and Android devices, as well as CarPlay and Android Auto, in the coming months. This announcement follows Google’s integration of the Gemini AI into Maps, which has been enhancing user interactions by answering questions about locations along routes and providing contextually relevant information.
