Google Maps adds Gemini-powered tips section, EV charger availability predictions, and more

Google Maps is enhancing its user experience with a series of exciting new features aimed at helping users navigate more efficiently and with greater awareness. Central to this update is the introduction of a Gemini-powered tool that offers a 'know before you go' section. When searching for locations such as restaurants, hotels, or entertainment venues, users will now encounter a dedicated tips section that delivers key insights about their chosen destination. This might include advice on securing reservations, discovering hidden menu items, and finding optimal parking spots. Users can click on individual tips to delve deeper into the information provided. This feature is currently being rolled out across the United States for both Android and iOS devices. In addition to the tips section, Google has revamped the Explore tab, making it quicker and more intuitive for users to discover trending locations nearby. With a simple swipe, users can now access popular restaurants, activities, and attractions in their vicinity, whether it's a newly opened café or a unique art gallery. The updated Explore tab, which also highlights curated lists from well-known sources like Viator and Lonely Planet, is set to launch globally this month on both Android and iOS platforms. For electric vehicle (EV) drivers, Google Maps is set to revolutionize the way they locate charging stations. By searching for 'EV chargers,' users will receive predictions on the availability of chargers when they arrive at their destination. This feature leverages AI technology to analyze both historical and real-time data, providing an estimate of how many charging points are likely to be free. This functionality is expected to start rolling out next week for Android Auto and vehicles equipped with Google built-in. Moreover, Google is introducing a new way for users to leave reviews under creative nicknames, such as 'Eager Elf' or 'Julia Loves Sweets.' While users can choose their display name, all reviews remain linked to their Google Account to ensure that each business receives a fair evaluation, preventing tactics like review bombing. These updates come on the heels of Google Maps’ integration with Gemini, allowing users to inquire about points of interest along their routes and perform various tasks, such as adding events to their calendars.
