Google Maps now lets you access Gemini while walking and cycling

In a significant update announced on Thursday, Google has introduced hands-free access to its AI assistant, Gemini, for users of Google Maps while walking and cycling. This enhancement follows the previous rollout of Gemini's conversational driving experience, reflecting Google’s commitment to integrating AI into daily navigation. Users can now engage with Gemini through voice commands while navigating their routes. For instance, pedestrians can inquire about their surroundings by asking questions such as, "What attractions are nearby?" or "Are there any cafes with restrooms on my path?" This feature aims to make navigation smoother by allowing users to interact with the app without needing to type, thereby maintaining their focus on their environment. For cyclists, the hands-free functionality is equally beneficial. Riders can ask Gemini questions like, "What’s my estimated time of arrival?" or request to send a text, such as, "Text Emily I’m 10 minutes behind," all while keeping their hands on the handlebars. This conversational approach enables users to ask multiple questions in a single interaction, enhancing the overall navigation experience. The update is currently being rolled out globally on iOS devices where Gemini is available, with an Android version on the way. This enhancement is part of a broader strategy by Google to make Maps more interactive. Recent updates also include a new section for “know before you go” tips, which provides crucial information about locations, such as reservation advice and secret menu items. Additionally, the revamped Explore tab now allows users to quickly discover popular spots nearby, and a new feature for predicting EV charger availability has been introduced, helping users know how many chargers will be accessible upon arrival at their destinations. This announcement arrives shortly after improvements to Google Chrome that incorporate Gemini for a more streamlined browsing and task management experience, positioning Google to compete with other AI-powered browsers.
