Google Maps upgrades navigation in India with Gemini, safety alerts

Google is set to revolutionize navigation in India by incorporating its advanced Gemini AI into Maps, alongside vital road safety alerts and enhanced route information. This innovative AI feature, which debuted in the United States recently, offers hands-free assistance and contextual suggestions, making navigation more intuitive and informative. Miriam Daniel, the vice president and lead of Google Maps, emphasized the importance of localization for Indian users during a recent virtual briefing. "Localizing for India goes beyond just language; it involves understanding how users interact with the app, how they phrase their inquiries, and even how they recognize geographical markers and street names," she explained. The Gemini feature is expected to be available to all Android and iOS users in India in the forthcoming weeks, supporting nine regional languages. Additionally, Google is rolling out navigation updates tailored specifically to Indian commuters. One notable enhancement includes visual and audio alerts for drivers when they approach accident-prone areas. This initiative is in collaboration with local authorities and will initially be available to Android users in regions like Gurugram, Cyberabad, Chandigarh, and Faridabad. Following concerns regarding the reliability of navigation routes in India, particularly after a tragic incident involving a car driving off an unfinished bridge, Google is keen on addressing these issues. Anal Ghosh, senior program manager for Google Maps, acknowledged the challenges of maintaining accurate maps in a rapidly changing environment, stating, "Real-world conditions are dynamic and can shift unexpectedly. While we strive for accuracy, we advise users to remain vigilant while driving." To enhance real-time navigation, Google has partnered with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to access up-to-date information on road closures and diversions. This collaboration will also help Maps indicate essential amenities like public restrooms, restaurants, and fuel stations along national highways. In addition to these features, users will receive proactive notifications about significant disruptions or delays on their routes, even when not actively navigating. These alerts are being rolled out for major highways in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Furthermore, the app will now display speed limits during navigation, utilizing data from local traffic authorities, and this feature will soon be made available to users in nine major cities, including Faridabad and Kolkata. Building on last year's flyover navigation feature, Google Maps is also introducing voice support for navigating flyovers, with this update rolling out in the coming weeks.
