Pixel 6a to receive mandatory Android 16 update amid battery safety fears

In a significant move, Google has announced that all Pixel 6a devices will receive a mandatory update to Android 16 as part of its newly introduced Battery Performance Programme. This update is scheduled to roll out starting July 8 and is designed to tackle ongoing battery issues that have affected the device in recent months. Previously, the Pixel 6a was not included in the list of devices eligible for the Android 16 update, which had already been made available for Pixel 6 through Pixel 9 models. However, in response to safety concerns, Google has now decided to make the update compulsory for Pixel 6a users, enabling essential safety features aimed at reducing risks linked to battery performance. According to information shared on Google’s support page, the update will specifically affect devices identified as “Impacted Devices.” These units will receive the new software automatically. Once the update is installed, users can expect enhanced battery management capabilities designed to combat overheating and potential damage. One of the key features of this update is the new limitation on battery capacity and charging performance after the device reaches 400 full charge cycles. Until that threshold is approached, these changes will not take effect. Users nearing 375 charge cycles will receive notifications alerting them to the upcoming adjustments. After the update, users may experience reduced charging speeds and temporary fluctuations in the battery-level indicator as the device adapts to the new settings. This initiative comes in light of several concerning reports regarding the Pixel 6a. Earlier this year, a user shared images of a swollen battery that caused the screen to detach from the device. Additionally, there were reports of a Pixel 6a exploding due to battery expansion. To address these issues, Google is offering free repairs for devices enrolled in the Battery Performance Programme. Affected users also have the option of receiving cash reimbursements or discount vouchers for future purchases through the Google Store.
