On Thursday, Google unveiled its second cohort for the AI Academy focused on American infrastructure. This initiative aims to assist companies leveraging artificial intelligence to tackle critical challenges in sectors like cybersecurity, education, and transportation. The four-month program caters to startups in their early stages, specifically those at seed to Series A funding levels. Participants receive valuable resources such as leadership coaching and sales training, all provided without equity requirements. While the program is primarily conducted online, participants will eventually gather for an in-person summit hosted by Google. Applications for this cohort were opened in late April and closed in mid-May, with selected companies having to meet rigorous criteria, including maintaining at least six months of operational runway and demonstrating proof of traction. Google has a strong reputation for identifying promising AI startups, as evidenced by alumni from the inaugural cohort, such as Cloverleaf AI, a government contractor that secured a $2.8 million seed round, and Zordi, an autonomous agriculture technology firm that raised $20 million from Khlosa Ventures. This new batch of startups marks another step in Google’s commitment to fostering AI innovation. Earlier this year, the tech giant launched the AI Futures Fund to support emerging companies utilizing cutting-edge AI tools from DeepMind. Furthermore, Google's philanthropic arm announced a $20 million investment to support researchers and nonprofits focused on AI development. In addition to these initiatives, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed plans for a $120 million Global AI Opportunity Fund aimed at enhancing accessibility to AI education worldwide. Google also runs several other programs to support entrepreneurs, such as its Founders Academy and Growth Academy. A spokesperson indicated that the Google for Startups Founders Fund would begin backing AI-focused startups this year, reinforcing the company's dedication to advancing the AI landscape.
