Google bets on Gemini to reinvent the smart home speaker

In a bold move to revolutionize the smart audio market, Google has unveiled its latest smart speaker featuring the advanced Gemini AI technology. Priced at $99.99, the new Google Home Speaker represents the company's first major audio device launch since the Nest Audio back in September 2020. This new device aims to surpass the traditional functionalities of smart speakers, which primarily served as basic controllers for smart home devices and music playback. Unlike earlier models, the Google Home Speaker allows users to engage in natural language conversations, making it easier to issue commands. Users can now say complex requests such as, "turn off all the lights except for my bedside lamp," or, "dim the kitchen lights, play some relaxing music, and set a timer for 20 minutes," without needing to phrase commands in a specific way. Moreover, the speaker is designed to understand corrections mid-sentence. For example, if a user starts to say, "turn off the coffee maker... I mean, turn it on!" the AI comprehends the change seamlessly. This capability enhances the interaction experience, making it more intuitive. The speaker also boasts ten new voices capable of engaging in conversations beyond mere task execution. Users can explore a variety of topics and ask deeper questions, similar to how they would interact with Gemini on a smartphone. A new feature called "Continued Conversation" allows the microphone to stay active briefly, enabling follow-up questions without needing to reactivate the command with "OK, Google." Visually, the speaker retains a familiar look with a 3D-knit textile covering and a compact design of 3.4 x 4.2 inches. It comes in various colors, including Jade and Berry for U.S. customers, alongside the global options of Hazel and Porcelain. A ring light at the base indicates the speaker's status—whether it is listening, processing, or responding. However, some features of this advanced AI experience will come at a cost. Google plans to introduce a subscription service, Google Home Premium, priced at $10 per month or $100 annually, which will unlock additional functionalities. This service promises richer conversational experiences with Gemini Live and enhanced capabilities for managing Nest camera activities. To help users acclimate to the new premium features, Google will offer a six-month free trial before users are prompted to subscribe. The success of this initiative could redefine the smart speaker landscape, merging generative AI with everyday technology. Pre-orders for the Google Home Speaker are currently open, with shipments expected later this month.
