Google unveils Googlebooks, a new line of AI-native laptops

On Tuesday, Google introduced its latest innovation, Googlebooks, a new series of laptops designed specifically around its premier AI model, Gemini. The tech titan is collaborating with major manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to produce a diverse range of Googlebooks, slated for release this fall. These laptops are positioned as the first to be entirely constructed with Gemini at their core, aiming to provide users with personalized and proactive assistance. A standout feature of Googlebooks is the introduction of 'Magic Pointer,' an AI-enhanced cursor that integrates Gemini capabilities. Unlike traditional cursors, this innovative tool allows users to wiggle the cursor to reveal quick, contextual suggestions based on the displayed content. For instance, hovering over a date in an email can facilitate instant meeting setup, while selecting two images enables users to visualize them together seamlessly. Alexander Kuscher, Google’s Senior Director of Android Tablets and Laptops, emphasized the smart functionality of this pointer during a briefing with reporters. He explained that the cursor not only interacts with the screen but also offers contextual actions that enhance user experience without being intrusive. In a significant advancement, Googlebooks will feature compatibility with Android smartphones, enabling users to access mobile apps directly from their laptops. For example, users can continue their Duolingo lessons on the larger screen without needing to pick up their phones. The integration also allows for straightforward access to files from mobile devices through Googlebook’s file browser, enhancing productivity and convenience. Additionally, Googlebooks introduces the 'Create your Widget' feature, where users can prompt Gemini to develop custom widgets. The AI can also retrieve information from the internet and connect with various Google applications, including Gmail and Calendar, to create a unified, personalized dashboard. For example, while planning a family reunion in Berlin, users can compile travel and reservation details, alongside a countdown timer. This launch marks a pivotal shift for Google, as the Googlebooks appear to succeed the Chromebook, which was launched 15 years ago and became a staple in educational and professional environments. Although Google has stated it will continue to support current Chromebook users with ongoing updates, it has not specified how these devices might transition to the new Googlebooks experience. This move signals a significant transition away from ChromeOS, towards an Android-based operating system that incorporates AI at its foundation. With prominent PC hardware partners already on board, this initiative represents not just a hardware update but a strategic platform shift, positioning Google in direct competition with Microsoft, which has been advancing its own AI-integrated PCs since 2024.
