Google, known for its vast array of products, has taken an intriguing step into the desktop realm with the introduction of a new app designed for Windows. This experimental application allows users to conduct searches across the web, Google Drive, and local files on their PCs. While Google has released a few desktop applications in the past, such as Drive and Quick Share, this marks a significant expansion of its offerings, particularly for its flagship service. Currently available for personal Google accounts, the app is still in its experimental phase, which means users might encounter some bugs. However, the core features appear to function effectively without being overly complicated. Upon installation, users can activate a floating Google search bar by pressing Alt+Space or a custom shortcut. Once open, users can type their search queries, with results displayed in a compact window just below the search bar. In addition to standard search results, the app integrates select content from Google’s Knowledge Graph, potentially allowing users to find information even if they only partially type their queries. This is a notable improvement over Microsoft’s built-in search functionality, which has faced criticism for its inefficiency. Even in its experimental state, Google’s search interface offers a faster, more streamlined experience that pulls together local files, Drive documents, and installed applications seamlessly. Users have the flexibility to choose whether to include local files and Drive in their search results. Moreover, the app features Google Lens, enabling users to select items on their screens for image searches or translation tasks, further enhancing its utility for Windows users.
