On Thursday, Google unveiled an innovative AI experiment designed to enhance web browsing: Disco, powered by its Gemini technology. This new tool enables users to transform their open tabs into personalized applications, referred to as "GenTabs." Disco proactively suggests interactive web apps tailored to assist with tasks related to your browsing activities. For example, if you are studying a specific topic, GenTabs can recommend creating an app to visualize the information, aiding in a deeper understanding of the material. Alternatively, for everyday needs, you could utilize GenTabs to compile meal plans from various online recipes or organize travel plans based on your research. While similar functionalities exist with AI chatbots today, GenTabs uniquely generates these custom experiences in real-time, leveraging both the information available in your browser and your chat history with Gemini 3. Once an app is created, users can further refine its features using natural language commands. Google emphasizes that all generative elements within the GenTabs experience will be linked back to the original sources. This initiative is part of a broader trend among tech companies to integrate AI more deeply into the web browsing experience. Unlike standalone AI browsers such as Perplexity’s Comet or ChatGPT Atlas, Google has opted to embed its AI assistant, Gemini, directly within the Chrome browser. This allows users to inquire about the content of the web page they are viewing. With GenTabs, the emphasis is not solely on the current webpage but encompasses the entire browsing task across multiple tabs, whether it's for research, learning, or other purposes. Initially, this feature will be accessible to a limited group of testers via Google Labs, who will provide feedback on their experiences. Google suggests that the intriguing ideas generated through Disco could eventually be incorporated into larger Google products. Moreover, GenTabs is just the first feature being tested within Disco, with more functionalities expected to be introduced in the future. To try Disco, users must join a waitlist for the app, which is launching first on macOS.
