Google unveils AI-driven Safety Charter for India amid rising cybercrimes

In a proactive move to address the alarming rise in cybercrime, Google has unveiled its Safety Charter tailored for India. This initiative is particularly timely as the country's digital economy continues to flourish, raising critical concerns regarding user safety and online scams. Through a recent blog post, the tech giant detailed its strategy of employing artificial intelligence (AI) across various services to identify, prevent, and eliminate security threats impacting both individual users and businesses. Google aims to bolster its efforts by collaborating with governmental initiatives, enhancing cyber awareness, and improving protective measures. According to a recent report, fraud linked to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) resulted in losses surpassing ₹1,087 crore in 2024, with predictions estimating total financial damages from cybercrime in India to reach ₹20,000 crore by 2025. The company highlighted that cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, utilizing advanced AI technologies for scams, including deepfakes and voice cloning. To counter these threats, Google is aligning its security systems with the Indian government's DigiKavach programme and has partnered with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to implement public awareness campaigns in stages. The company has already taken significant enforcement actions, removing 247 million ads and suspending 2.9 million accounts due to policy violations, while adhering to local and national regulations. In its search operations, Google reported using AI to block fraudulent webpages at a rate approximately 20 times higher than before. Furthermore, there has been a notable reduction in fake websites that impersonate customer support services and government portals, with decreases of over 80% and 70%, respectively. In addition, Google Messages has adopted a new AI-driven scam detection tool, flagging over 500 million suspicious messages each month and issuing alerts when users engage with links from unknown sources, with over 2.5 billion warnings generated to date. The Safety Charter represents Google’s comprehensive approach to tackling the evolving landscape of digital threats, particularly as cybercriminals increasingly exploit cutting-edge technologies to circumvent traditional security measures.
