Former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal's AI search venture, Parallel Web Systems, is intensifying its collaboration with Google, the leading search engine globally. Founded over two years ago, Parallel aims to revolutionize how AI agents explore the web. This new partnership allows Google to offer Parallel's capabilities to its cloud clients who are developing AI agents based on the Gemini model, thereby providing Parallel with access to Google’s extensive customer base. Backed by prominent investors such as Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, and Kleiner Perkins, Parallel has successfully raised $230 million and achieved a valuation of $2 billion as of April. Agrawal, who envisioned Parallel out of a fascination with the future role of AI in web searching, believes that AI agents will eventually surpass humans in web searches, necessitating a different approach. Unlike traditional search engines that prioritize easily readable webpages, Parallel is designed to extract information for AI models, including data that may be hidden within complex documents. As AI agents become increasingly relied upon, the need for current and relevant information has never been more critical. This need, referred to as 'grounding,' is a key focus for both Parallel and other startups like Exa. Matt Renner, President of Google Cloud, stated that the partnership with Parallel aligns with Google's strategy to provide customers with varied options. While Google has its own grounding tools, businesses may seek different solutions tailored to their specific needs. Notably, Parallel's services are also available on other cloud platforms, including Amazon Web Services. Agrawal emphasized that the partnership with Google extends beyond mere distribution, representing their most comprehensive technical integration with a major cloud provider to date. Since its inception, Parallel has been primarily built on Google Cloud, and recent collaborative efforts between engineers from both companies aim to simplify tool integration for customers. Major clients, such as legal AI startup Harvey, are already utilizing Parallel's search capabilities to enhance their AI models with up-to-date web information alongside proprietary data.
