Want to test the next Pixel phone? Here’s how Google chooses its ‘Superfans’

Google is extending an exciting opportunity to its most passionate Pixel enthusiasts. The tech giant has unveiled a program called the 'Trusted Tester Programme,' allowing select members of its 'Superfans' community to gain early access to upcoming Pixel devices before their public debut. This initiative is particularly noteworthy, as it marks a departure from typical practices seen in major tech companies. Only 15 participants will be chosen from the pool of applicants, who must sign a non-disclosure agreement and use protective cases provided by Google to keep the test units confidential. Applicants are encouraged to showcase their knowledge and passion for Pixel products, as well as propose enhancements for Google’s hardware and software. While tech firms occasionally conduct internal testing for unreleased products, Google's decision to involve consumers reflects a strategic change in how it engages with its user base. Although specific dates for testing have not been disclosed, historically, Google has launched new Pixel models around August. This pattern suggests that beta testing could commence in the spring of 2026. As the Pixel lineup appears to be on the brink of a significant redesign, expectations are high. Ivy Ross, Google's hardware design chief, previously indicated that the company revisits its design aesthetics every two to three years. With the current Pixel 10, launched in August 2025, maintaining a visual similarity to its predecessor, a major design refresh may be on the horizon for future iterations. Additionally, the Trusted Tester Programme could serve as a strategic move for Google to manage the narrative surrounding its upcoming devices. The company has faced challenges in curbing leaks, with unofficial images and renders of new Pixel phones often surfacing well before their official release dates.
