How to spot genuine investment apps with Google’s new SEBI-backed verified badge

In a significant step to enhance online safety, Google has partnered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch a verification system for investment apps on its Play Store. This initiative aims to help users easily identify legitimate investment platforms amidst a surge in fraudulent applications. The newly introduced 'verified app' label will be prominently displayed on apps that belong to intermediaries registered with SEBI, starting with stockbrokers. This visual verification serves as a quick reference for users, signaling that the app is authorized to provide financial services. Such a measure is crucial, especially with the increasing prevalence of fake trading applications that aim to deceive unsuspecting investors. Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Chairman of SEBI, emphasized that this initiative is part of a proactive strategy to implement safeguards before any potential harm occurs, rather than responding reactively after incidents of fraud. The timing of this rollout is particularly pertinent, as India is witnessing a concerning uptick in online financial scams. Many of these scams are directed at inexperienced investors, who may lack the financial literacy needed to navigate digital platforms safely. SEBI has reported that it has already flagged over 130,000 instances of misleading investment content for removal from digital platforms and identified 66 fraudulent trading apps that have since been taken down. The verification system operates in conjunction with SEBI's regulatory database, ensuring that only verified entities are permitted to advertise on platforms such as Google and Amazon. Currently, the verified badge is being implemented for stockbroker applications, with more than 600 already included on the Google Play Store. SEBI intends to gradually expand this system to encompass additional regulated intermediaries. While the introduction of the verification badge is a promising development, regulators urge users to remain vigilant. SEBI's advice is straightforward: "First verify, then invest." Investors are encouraged to take the necessary steps to confirm the legitimacy of any investment app before proceeding.
