In a significant move towards transparency, Google is launching a new feature designed to inform users when they are viewing advertisements created with artificial intelligence. This initiative highlights the dual-edged nature of AI in advertising, which can facilitate cost-effective ad creation while potentially misleading consumers if they are unaware that the visuals may not represent actual products. Historically, Google has mandated disclosure for AI-generated content only in election ads. However, recognizing the broader implications of synthetic media, the tech giant is expanding this requirement across all ad formats. The new feature will be integrated into the 'My Ad Center' panel, accessible worldwide through the three-dot menu or info icon associated with ads on Google Search, YouTube, and Google Discover. This panel already allows users to block or report ads and gain insights about advertisers and their promotional strategies. With the new option, users will be able to see a label stating “how this ad was made,” indicating whether AI played a role in its creation or editing. Google emphasizes that when advertisers utilize its generative AI tools, the disclosure will be automatically activated. In cases where ads are produced externally, it will be the advertisers' responsibility to declare any AI involvement; Google will not independently verify these claims. Additionally, in certain regions, advertisements may carry AI labels if mandated by local regulations.
