Google’s ‘Create My Widget’ feature will let you vibe code your own widgets

On Tuesday, Google announced an exciting new feature called 'Create My Widget' for Android devices. This tool empowers users to design their own personalized widgets using simple, natural language prompts. The launch is set to debut on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones this summer. With this feature, users can easily articulate their widget preferences. For instance, by requesting 'three high-protein meal prep recipes each week,' users can generate a tailored dashboard that fits seamlessly on their home screens. Cyclists can also benefit by customizing a weather widget that exclusively displays relevant metrics like wind speed and rainfall. The 'Create My Widget' function utilizes Gemini, Google's generative AI, which can access web information and integrate with Google applications such as Gmail and Calendar. This means that if you're organizing a family reunion in Berlin, the feature can compile essential details such as flight information, hotel bookings, restaurant reservations, and even a countdown timer. This rollout represents Google’s commitment to embedding generative AI deeper into the Android ecosystem, particularly as tech firms strive to enhance user customization options. Ben Greenwood, Director of PM for Android Core Experiences, described it as akin to having a personal assistant who continuously delivers information. He emphasized the vast potential of the feature, stating it opens up numerous practical applications by leveraging both general knowledge and personal data. The announcement of 'Create My Widget' coincides with the introduction of Gemini Intelligence, which promises enhanced capabilities, including advanced autofill options and an AI-driven voice dictation feature for Gboard, among others.
