Google rolls out new Gemini capabilities to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive

On Tuesday, Google unveiled an array of innovative AI features powered by Gemini, integrated into its Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive applications. These enhancements are designed to streamline workflows, allowing users to generate fully formatted documents, slides, and spreadsheets directly from their Gmail, Chat, and Drive content, all without the need to switch to external tools or chatbots. One standout addition is the "Help me create" tool in Docs, which enables users to articulate their creative needs. Gemini responds by gathering relevant information from Drive, Gmail, and Chat to produce a preliminary draft. For instance, users can instruct Gemini to draft a newsletter for their neighborhood association based on previous meeting notes and upcoming events. Once a draft is created, Gemini can assist in refining specific sections without needing to regenerate the entire document. The "Help me write" feature further enhances this by improving clarity or enriching content as needed. Collaboration is also a focal point, with the introduction of the "Match writing style" feature that harmonizes different voices and tones within a document, ensuring consistency throughout. Additionally, a new "Match the format" tool allows users to replicate the structure and style of existing documents. For example, if a user finds a travel itinerary template they prefer, Gemini can populate it with personalized trip details sourced from their emails, such as flight confirmations and hotel bookings. In Sheets, Gemini transitions from a simple tool to a collaborative partner. A single prompt can now extract essential data from Gmail, Chat, and Drive to create a fully formatted spreadsheet. Users might request, for instance, a checklist for organizing a move, complete with utility contacts and a table for moving company quotes. For more intricate tasks, the "Fill with Gemini" feature accelerates table population, allowing Gemini to generate custom text, summarize data, or even fetch real-time information from Google Search. In Slides, users can now request a fully editable slide that aligns with their presentation theme, drawing context from their files, emails, and the web. Users can refine slides by asking Gemini to adjust colors or simplify designs. Looking ahead, Google plans to allow users to generate entire presentations from a single prompt, drawing on relevant context to craft a cohesive narrative. Lastly, Drive is evolving to become an active collaborator rather than just a file storage service. When users conduct searches using natural language, Gemini will provide an "AI Overview" summarizing key information from documents, citing sources to save time. A new feature, "Ask Gemini in Drive," empowers users to pose complex questions about their documents, emails, and calendars. For instance, users can query their tax-related files to determine what to ask their tax advisor before filing. These cutting-edge features are rolling out in beta and will initially be available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, with global access in English for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and U.S. availability for Drive.
