Google will now let you pick your top sources for search results

In a significant update, Google is launching a feature known as "Preferred Sources" in both the United States and India. This new functionality empowers users to curate their own selection of news websites and blogs, which will be prominently featured in the Top Stories section of search results. With this feature enabled, users can expect to see an increased amount of content from their chosen sources. When users perform a search on a specific topic, a distinct “star” icon will appear next to the Top Stories section. By tapping on this icon, they can easily add their preferred news outlets by searching for them directly. After selecting their desired sources, users can refresh their search results to discover additional content tailored to their preferences. Google has indicated that in some cases, users may notice a dedicated “From your sources” section appearing beneath the Top Stories, offering more direct access to information from their selected outlets. While this feature enhances user control over their news consumption, it also raises concerns about the potential for creating echo chambers, where individuals may only be exposed to viewpoints that align with their own. Initially tested as part of Google’s Search Labs, this feature saw participation from users who opted in, with over half selecting four or more sources during the trial phase. Now, it is being rolled out to all English-language users in the U.S. and India, marking a new chapter in personalized search experiences.
