In an effort to streamline the app selection process, Google is leveraging its advanced Gemini technology to roll out AI-generated review summaries on the Play Store. This new feature aims to assist users in quickly assessing app reviews, making it easier for them to decide whether to download an application. According to reports from Android Authority, these AI-driven summaries were first identified in Google Play Store version 48.5.23-31. However, many users, including those with the latest version of the Play Store, have yet to see the feature, suggesting that the rollout may be occurring in stages. The AI-generated summaries condense the most prevalent advantages and disadvantages of apps into a concise paragraph. This allows users to grasp the general consensus on an app's performance without having to sift through numerous individual reviews. The summaries appear in the “Ratings and reviews” section under a prominent heading that reads, “Users are saying,” followed by the summary and a disclaimer that states, “Summarized by Google AI.” Additionally, beneath the summary, users will find interactive ‘chips’ that they can select for more detailed insights regarding specific aspects of the app, such as “user interface,” “file management,” or “performance.” While Google has been at the forefront of innovation among major tech companies, it is noteworthy that Apple launched a similar feature for the iOS App Store back in April. Frequent users of Amazon may also recognize a comparable interface for product reviews on their platform. Google is keen to avoid the pitfalls it encountered with its initial AI overviews for Google Search, which once suggested ludicrous ideas like adding glue to pizza to enhance cheese adhesion or consuming rocks for their vitamin content. On a positive note, Google's AI overviews have shown stability since those early missteps, aside from minor errors, such as misinterpreting dates. Furthermore, Google has integrated AI Mode into its search experience, offering users a comprehensive chatbot for more complex queries in natural language.
