In an exciting development, Google is experimenting with a groundbreaking feature that converts intricate search inquiries into concise, AI-generated podcast-like discussions. Dubbed Audio Overviews, this innovative tool harnesses the power of Google's Gemini AI models to produce lively, dual-voice summaries, providing users with an interactive, hands-free method to grasp information. Currently in testing through Google’s Search Labs, this feature is designed to assist with more complex questions rather than straightforward queries such as weather updates or calendar events. Instead, it addresses broader subjects like the historical importance of Flag Day or the role of Argon in scientific contexts. When the feature becomes accessible, users will notice a “Generate Audio Overview” button positioned beneath the search bar. After a brief waiting period, Google will deliver an engaging back-and-forth dialogue between two AI-generated voices, summarizing the information sourced from leading search results, with all references duly cited. Although Audio Overviews are not entirely new to Google, having first emerged in the AI note-taking application NotebookLM and subsequently incorporated into the Gemini app with enhanced functionalities like follow-up questions and a “Deep Dive” mode, the version integrated into Search is notably more straightforward. However, it still allows users to customize playback speed, ranging from 0.25x to 2x, and adjust volume through an integrated media player. At this stage, the feature is exclusively available to users who opt in through Search Labs, with access seemingly restricted, likely to those utilizing the Google app. Google aims to position this tool as a more intuitive way for users to explore unfamiliar topics while on the move.
