After years of legal battles with Epic Games over the Play Store's practices, Google is finally making significant changes as part of their recent settlement. This month, the tech giant has begun rolling out reduced developer fees and new payment options in select markets, with plans for broader implementation soon. Historically, Google adhered to a commission structure similar to Apple's, charging developers a hefty 30 percent for transactions within the Play Store. This approach came under scrutiny when Epic Games introduced external billing for Fortnite, leading to its removal from both the Google Play and Apple App Store. Although Apple emerged largely victorious in its legal confrontation, Google faced challenges in managing the Play Store while appearing more open to competition. In a notable turn of events, the settlement with Epic aims to resolve their global dispute without imposing drastic measures such as mandatory distribution of third-party app stores. Nevertheless, the new fee structure will be a game-changer for many developers. Starting June 30, developers in the U.S., UK, and Europe will benefit from a revised commission model that divides fees into billing and service components. One of the standout features of this new system is a flat service fee of just 10 percent for the first $1 million earned annually. Beyond that threshold, various transaction types may incur rates of up to 25 percent for existing apps, while those installed after June 30 will have a cap of 20 percent. Additionally, developers now have the freedom to direct users to complete transactions outside the Play Store, as long as they adhere to Google's UX guidelines. This change will allow them to avoid the billing fee while still paying the standard service fee on external purchases.
