Google Images gets a Pinterest-like redesign focused on discovery

This update marks the celebration of 25 years since the launch of Google Images and introduces a feature that allows users to generate AI-created images directly within the search engine. This new layout is designed to inspire and engage users by providing a more dynamic browsing experience, encouraging them to discover and save visual ideas ranging from fashion to home decor. By shifting its focus from merely searching for images to fostering a space for visual exploration, Google aims to increase user interaction and, in turn, boost its advertising revenue. The revamped Google Images will feature a personalized “For You” gallery, curated based on individual interests and browsing history. This continuous browsing experience updates in real-time with fresh content, similar to Pinterest's functionality. Users can create and save collections tailored to specific themes, such as vacation outfit ideas or home design inspirations, making it easy to return to their favorite finds later. Rolling out over the coming weeks, this redesign will be accessible on desktop in the U.S. for English-speaking users who log into their Google accounts. Additionally, Google is enhancing its search capabilities with an AI image generation tool. This feature is aimed at users with specific visual concepts that may not be readily available online. By incorporating the new Nano Banana model, Google will transform text prompts into customized visuals, allowing users to visualize ideas—like reimagining a room’s color scheme or designing a themed dormitory—directly through Search. This feature will also start rolling out in English across all regions where AI image creation is currently supported.
