GFiber, previously known as Google Fiber, is set to undergo a significant transformation as it is acquired by the private equity firm Stonepeak. This strategic move will see GFiber merge with Astound Broadband, creating a formidable independent Internet service provider. The announcement was made by Alphabet, Google's parent company, which will retain a minority stake in the new entity. Originally launched in 2012 with ambitious expansion goals, GFiber faced challenges and scaled back its plans in 2016. However, this merger is expected to provide the necessary operational and financial independence for GFiber, offering it the capital and strategic direction required to accelerate its growth trajectory. While the specifics of the new brand identity remain uncertain—whether it will continue under the GFiber name, adopt Astound’s branding, or create a new identity—current GFiber executives will lead the merged company, leveraging their expertise in high-speed fiber innovations. The merger aims to combine GFiber's rapidly growing metropolitan networks with Astound's established infrastructure, thus creating a robust national network platform. Alphabet's President and Chief Investment Officer, Ruth Porat, emphasized that this collaboration will enable GFiber to extend its reach across the United States while maintaining its reputation for exceptional customer service. Stonepeak's Senior Managing Director, Andrew Thomas, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the potential for growth with Alphabet as a co-investor. The merger is pending regulatory approvals and is expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter of this year, although the financial details of the sale have not been disclosed.
