Google is in early talks to deepen its investment in Anthropic

In a significant move within the tech industry, Google is reportedly engaging in initial discussions to enhance its financial commitment to Anthropic. This new investment round could potentially elevate Anthropic's valuation to over $350 billion, as per insights from sources familiar with the negotiations. The ongoing talks, still in the negotiation phase, might manifest as a strategic investment where Google could extend additional cloud computing resources to Anthropic, or possibly as a convertible note or a priced funding round slated for early next year. Details on the specific amount of investment from Google or the involvement of other investors remain unclear at this stage. Both Anthropic and Google have chosen not to comment on the situation. To date, Google has invested upwards of $3 billion in Anthropic, securing a 14% stake in the company, as indicated by legal filings reported in March. Last September, Anthropic successfully raised $13 billion at a valuation of $138 billion, while OpenAI recently reached a valuation of $500 billion through a secondary sale that allowed employees to liquidate shares. These discussions come at a time when Anthropic is vying for dominance in the AI landscape alongside its key competitor, OpenAI, known for its ChatGPT model. The race is on, with major tech players aligning themselves; Amazon and Google are backing Anthropic, while Microsoft and Nvidia have poured billions into OpenAI. Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic is recognized for its Claude series of large language models. In October, Google and Anthropic struck a landmark cloud computing deal valued in the tens of billions, enabling Anthropic to utilize up to one million of Google's specially designed Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to enhance its machine learning capabilities. Additionally, Amazon has invested $14 billion in Anthropic, leveraging AWS custom chips for its AI model development. Anthropic has emphasized its ongoing commitment to its partnership with Amazon, which serves as its primary training partner and cloud provider. Recently, Amazon's Project Rainer, one of the largest AI compute clusters globally, came online to support Claude, further solidifying Anthropic's technological foundation.
