Google’s EU search results could soon feature competitors first

In a significant move to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., is reportedly planning to revamp its search results in Europe. According to a Bloomberg report, the tech giant aims to increase visibility for competitor services related to shopping and travel. The proposed changes include the introduction of a prominent feature at the top of Google’s search results. This would showcase ranked offerings from rival price-comparison sites, allowing users to navigate directly to platforms like Expedia or Booking.com. Sources familiar with the proposal, who spoke anonymously as the plans are not yet public, indicated that this box would highlight the most relevant site based on Google’s ranking algorithm. Additionally, a drop-down menu could provide links to other services, including Google’s own comparison tools. In another version of this revamped interface, users might see a straightforward list of links to shopping and travel providers directly below the main search results. This adjustment is part of Google’s efforts to address EU regulators' concerns after the European Commission warned the company in March about potential violations of the DMA, particularly regarding its tendency to favor its own services, such as Google Flights, over those of competitors. The Commission's scrutiny follows years of complaints alleging that Google exploits its market dominance to stifle competition. In 2022, the company faced a €2.4 billion fine from the EU for similar anti-competitive practices related to its shopping services, a case that has underscored Brussels' commitment to regulating digital monopolies. The DMA, which is set to take effect in 2024, aims to curb the abusive practices of dominant tech firms. It prohibits preferential treatment of a company's own services and limits the merging of personal data across different platforms. Companies found in violation can face hefty fines—up to 10% of their global annual revenue, or 20% for repeat offenses. While Google has previously made attempts to increase the visibility of competitor links in its search results for users in Europe, critics argue that its own services continue to occupy the most advantageous positions. This proposed update comes as the EU intensifies its regulatory efforts against major US tech companies. Recently, Apple was fined €500 million for alleged anti-competitive behavior in its App Store, while Meta Platforms faced a €200 million penalty for its advertising practices on Instagram and Facebook. The EU's aggressive regulatory stance has raised eyebrows in the United States, with some officials describing the fines as a form of economic coercion. This has added tension to ongoing trade negotiations, particularly in light of former President Donald Trump's previous threats of broad tariffs on US trading partners.
